Small Vanities: CCAI Merrilee
Hortt Exhibition at Carson City Courthouse
Capital City Arts Initiative opens its 2005 exhibition season at
the Carson City Courthouse gallery with “Small Vanities: Works
on Paper 1997-2004,” featuring work by Las Vegas artist Merrilee
Hortt.
The exhibition opens with an artist’s reception on Thursday,
February 17 from 5:00 to 6:30
p.m. Admission is free and the public is cordially invited. The Courthouse
is located at 885 East Musser Street in Carson City.
The exhibition presents a survey of Ms. Hortt’s graphic works
over the past eight years. Her mastery of an impressive range of
drawing techniques is matched with an insightful and often humorous
visual commentary in her artworks. Ten expertly rendered pencil drawings
of everyday objects comprise the "Small Vanities" series.
Drawn in
graphite, color pencils and accented with acrylic, each miniature still
life is rendered to mimic early photographic processing.
Ms. Hortt is currently on the adjunct faculty at the University
of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her work has been widely shown, prominently
in
Las Vegas, and has been included in national and international
exhibitions. She has received numerous awards, including a Best
of Show award
in the 1994 Nevada Biennial.
The Capital City Arts Initiative is
an artist-centered organization committed to the encouragement
and support
