FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 15, 2010

“Once (Upon) A Forest” Exhibition by Lorraine Gilbert

The Capital City Arts Initiative Courthouse Gallery will present “Once (Upon) A Forest,” an exhibition by Canadian artist and educator, Lorraine Gilbert. The exhibition opens on September 29. There will be a reception for the artist Friday, October 1, from from 5-7 pm. The Courthouse is located at 885 East Musser Street, Carson City. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Ms Gilbert’s exhibition, “Once (Upon) A Forest,” features meticulously produced photographic murals which detail common plants in various stages of their life cycle. Her images—the result of activities in her dual roles of artist and biologist—present one continuous idea, illustrated by views of two distinct ecosystems: the wilderness and urban spaces. Ms. Gilbert comments: “Once (Upon) A Forest provides an (accelerated) evolutionary dialog: the abandoned field in the city used to be the Boreal forest of 200 years ago.”

Ms. Gilbert’s intimate connection to her native Canada, and personal involvement with re-forestation efforts are reflected in her artwork. She spent many summers as part of a team of tree planters in British Columbia, following the wake of lumber companies clear-cutting. Her professional background in biology and forestry highlight environmental concerns and the complexity of changing ecosystems.

Ms. Gilbert lives in the Laurentians of Quebec and in Ottawa, Ontario. She teaches art at the University of Ottawa. Her work has been exhibited throughout Canada and the United States.

In conjunction with her exhibition, Ms. Gilbert will present “True North: Canadian Artists and the Environment,” a talk on Wednesday, September 29 at 7 pm at the Carson City Library, 885 East Musser Street. The talk is free and the public is cordially invited.

The exhibtion continues though January 14, 2010.
