CCAI Nevada Neighbors Lecture Series at Carson City Library
"Revolutionary Maker: Wendy Tremayne"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 26, 2009

"Revolutionary Maker: Wendy Tremayne"

The Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] is pleased to present a public event with visiting artist|activist Wendy Tremayne. Her illustrated talk, "The Maker as Revolutionary in Times of Commodified Culture" is the latest installament of "Nevada Neighbors," CCAI's ongoing series of illustrated public talks. It will take place on Thursday, November 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Carson City Library. There will be an informal reception for Ms. Tremayne preceding the event at 6:15 p.m. The Carson City Library is located at 900 North Roop Street in Carson City. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.

The presentation is part of the CCAI's fall program "Recycled Seconds" which focuses on on community-based practice, 'do it yourself' fashion design, sustainability and civic engagement. In her talk, Wendy Tremayne will explore evolving grassroots trends in contemporary life, from design to social activism. She writes: "Revivifying the human experience is a mission of purpose, something commodified life has taken from us. What we have to gain is intimacy, creativity, the revival of community, a healthy planet and ultimately happiness. We can each embrace a do-it-yourself spirit and use it to break down the barrier between consumer and creator and by doing so begin to reclaim the creativity that has been lost."

Ms. Tremayne has an impressive history of engagement in innovative arts and culture practices. In 2005, while residing in New York City, Ms. Tremayne created Swap-O-Rama-Rama, a spirited alternative to consumerism that involves participants trading and redesigning discarded clothing. Since its introduction Swap-O-Rama-Rama has been staged in more than three dozen cities and several countries, receiving extensive press coverage in national and international media.

In 2006, Ms. Tremayne moved to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico "to join a pioneering spirit emerging in the desert fueled by the energies of healers and artists." She is currently building an off-grid Bed and Breakfast and a commons made from recycled materials.

During her three-day visit to nothern Nevada, she will visit local schools to give presentations. As with all Nevada Neighbors speakers, she will also meet informally with artists and art students for conversations on a broad range of topics.
