FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 1, 2008 Capital City Arts Initiative's ongoing series of presentations on contemporary art, "Nevada Neighbors," will resume this fall with "Sounds Good: Experimental Contemporary Music," a talk by composer Jean-Paul Perrotte on Wednesday, September 17, at the Carson City Library at 6:30 p.m. There will be an informal reception for Mr. Perrotte at the library at 6:00 p.m. preceding his talk. The library is located at 900 North Roop Street. The lecture and reception are free and the public is cordially invited. Mr. Perrotte's talk will provide a fascinating introduction to contemporary experimental music. As a composer, Mr. Perrotte is interested in the real sounds in our everyday life, as well as the music and sounds created by composers and musicians. He comments: "The sounds of our environment define our location. The rhythm, pitch and timber of the sonic events we experience in our daily activity become familiar to us. That familiarity helps us navigate our immediate surroundings. By juxtaposing disparate field recordings with synthesized sound, new environments can be created, with new navigational possibilities." Jean-Paul Perrotte is an American composer currently finishing his Ph.D. in Composition at The University of Iowa where his teachers have included Professors Lawrence Fritts and David Gompper. He is currently adjunct faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno. The Capital City Arts Initiative is an artist-centered organization committed to the encouragement and support of artists and the arts and culture of Carson City and the surrounding region.
