China Now: New Horizons in Chinese Contemporary Art"

, Consulting Curator of Contemporary Art at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco will present an illustrated talk on Chinese art at the Carson City Library on Wednesday, October 17. The talk is part of "Nevada Neighbors," the Capital City Arts Initiative’s lecture series on contemporary art.

The presentation will take place at 7:00 p.m. There will be a reception for Mr. Kelley at 6:15 at the library prior to the event. The library is located at 900 North Roop Street. The lecture and reception are free and the public is cordially invited.

In his presentation, Mr. Kelley will talk about exhibitions of contemporary Chinese art he has curated at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco as well as preview an upcoming project at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He will also provide an insightful overview of art in today's China.

A practicing art critic since 1977, Mr. Kelley has written for Artforum, Art in America, Artweek, Vanguard, and the Los Angeles Times, among others. He has also contributed catalogue essays to publications for the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the San Jose Museum of Art, the Des Moines Art Center, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.


He is the editor of "Essays on the Blurring of Art and Life," by Allan Kaprow, published by the University of California Press in 1993."Childsplay: The Art of Allan Kaprow” – his book on Kaprow's Happenings since the 1950s – was published in October 2004, also for the University of California Press.

Mr. Kelley also served as Artist in Residence Coordinator for the Nevada Arts Council in the early 1980's while living in Reno.


The Capital City Arts Initiative is an artist-centered organization committed to the encouragement and support of artists and the arts and culture of Carson City and the surrounding region. The Initiative is committed to community building for the area's diverse adult and youth populations through art projects and exhibitions, live events, arts education programs, artist residencies, and its web site.
