We Might Should Could
CCAI Nevada Neighbors Talk by Justin Favela
On Wednesday, March 26, the Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] will present a talk by artist Justin Favela. His illustrated talk, We Might Should Could, is the next in CCAI’s Nevada Neighbors series. The talk will take place at 7pm at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor St, Carson City. There will be an informal reception for Mr. Favela preceding the event at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.
In We Might Should Could, Justin will discuss his artwork that draws from art history, popular
culture, and his Latino heritage. He brings a youthful and whimsical perspective to a field that often takes itself quite seriously. His 2011 installation at the Clark County Government Center, County Center, spoofed the Center’s high-end art collection. Following the Center’s purchase of a large travertine marble sculpture by Henry Moore, Favela mimicked the form in cardboard and paint. He gave homage to Maya Lin’s sculpture that used recycled silver to trace the Colorado River’s path by tracing the Las Vegas Wash’s trajectory in chicken wire, aluminum foil, and cardboard – materials he found in the Wash.
Justin Favela is a Las Vegas native working in the mediums of painting, sculpture, and performance. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Nevada and nationally. His Las Vegas exhibition venues include the Contemporary Arts Center, Trifecta Gallery, and Gamma Gamma Gallery. Favela’s show at the Clark County Government Center, received local and national attention including a review in the Wall Street Journal. He works at the Neon Museum in Las Vegas and earned a B.F.A. in Studio Arts at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2010.
As part of his CCAI visit, Mr. Favela will give his talk to art students and faculty at
Douglas High School and at Sierra Nevada College. This summer, CCAI will bring him back for a residency and exhibition of his work in the annual collaboration with St. Mary’s Art Center in Virginia City.
