IMMEDIATE RELEASE CCAI and SMAC are delighted to present “The Museum of Bitter Sorrows presents ‘Life Is A Prison, Please Grant Me A Release,’” an exhibition by San Francisco Bay Area artist Scott MacLeod. The exhibition follows his two-week artist residency at St. Mary’s Art Center, located in Virginia City at 55 North R Street. The mixed-media exhibition opens on Saturday, June 5, with an artist reception from four to six p.m. The gallery will be open to the public Friday through Sunday, 11am to 4pm through June 30. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. The artist works in mixed media, combining a wide range of materials to create enigmatic, fanciful and engaging sculptures and drawings. He is also an accomplished experimental writer, and has exhibited his work and presented readings throughout the United States and Europe. In conjunction with the project, CCAI commissioned arts writer and critic Pam Grady to pen a catalog essay. She writes: "An exhibit preparator in art and history museums, as well as a performance artist, Scott MacLeod brings an expert eye and a showman's perspective to the gallery. For his St. Mary's installation, MacLeod turns to history and pop culture, filling the space with material and ephemera derived from the documentation of disasters—natural and man made." The artists adds: “It is always seen as especially tragic when people die at work, but there is something especially poignant about the deaths of miners.” During his residency, the artist will be working in a studio at St. Mary’s, immersed in the rich history of the building and City. The project marks CCAI and St. Mary’s second collaboration. St Mary’s Executive Director Linda Nazemian comments: “We’re delighted to host Scott. We always enjoy the opportunity to share Virginia City and the Comstock’s landscape and culture. The exhibition runs through June 30.
