"North of the 49th Parallel: Art In Canada" Talk by Sylvie Gilbert

"Nevada Neighbors," Capital City Arts Initiative's ongoing series of presentations on contemporary art, returns in February with "North of the 49th Parallel," a talk by Canadian curator Sylvie Gilbert on Wednesday, February 18 at the Carson City Library at 6:30 p.m. There will be an informal reception for Sylvie Gilbert at the library at 6:00 p.m. preceding her talk.

The talk and reception are free and the public is cordially invited. The library is located at 900 North Roop Street.

Ms. Gilbert received a BA in Art History from the Université de Montréal, and a MA in Media Studies from Concordia University. She has been active as a gallery director, curator, writer and an educator for over twenty years. She worked as a junior curator at the Musée d'art contemporain and the Centre International d'art contemporain in Montréal, and as the visual arts officer at the Canada Council for the Arts, in Ottawa from 1985 to 1988. Most recently, through 2008 she was the senior curator at the Banff Centre's Walter Phillips Gallery and International Curatorial Institute where she commissioned new works by young artists, re-staged seminal Canadian works, and organized trail-blazing exhibitions focusing on a diverse range of topics including art and cinema, performance, and Canadian comics.

Ms. Gilbert has also published articles and participated in international conferences. In her illustrated Nevada Neighbors talk, she will present a dynamic selection of work by contemporary Canadian artists, highlighting innovative practices and trends in aesthetics north of the 49th parallel.
